Education and Career

Yesim Uncu graduated from Turkey’s Bursa Uludağ University Medical School in 1992. Between 1990 and 1992, she worked at the health center in Konya Sarayönü, Turkey, for her compulsory service. She worked as a general practitioner and medical director at the Fevzi Çakmak Health Center in Bursa between 1992 and 1995. After completing her family medicine specialization in Bursa Uludağ University’s Family Medicine Department in 1999, she became an assistant professor in 2003, associate professor in 2008, and professor in 2015. She was an observer in the Family Medicine Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago during her residency in 1995. She served as a national representative for Turkey in WONCA Europe (World Organization of Family Doctors) between 2010 and 2015 and secretary general of TAHUD (Turkish Association of Family Physicians).

She is certified in family & couple therapy, and has a postgraduate degree in psychology.

She currently coordinates the Ph.D. curriculum with the Biostatistics Department and Medical History and Bioethics Department in Bursa Uludag University.

Areas of Interest and Research

Yesim’s research activities and interests focus on primary health care and family medicine, health promotion, and risky health behavior. Her areas of interest also cover health promotion, personalized care for chronic diseases, patient-physician interviewing, simulated patient training, problem-based learning, and couple and family therapy.

She has been involved in various multidisciplinary projects as a researcher and coordinator, such as THE STREET IN OUR HOUSE, which was about safety internet usage in schoolchildren, and ATF-ALGORITM, which was about reviewing the diagnostic criteria about acute tonsillopharyngitis. She participated as a researcher in a project, funded by the European Union’s FP7 program, titled OTC SOCIOMED (FP7-HEALTH-2007-B, Assessing the Over-the-Counter Medications in Primary Care and Translating the Theory of Planned Behaviour into Interventions, number 223654).
