Department’s Brief History

The request of the Rectorate of Uludağ University on the establishment of the Department of Medical Education (TEAD) on 03.02.2014 was approved by the Executive Board of the Higher Education Council on 19.02.2014 and the decision of TEAD was established on 17.03.2014 and the two faculty members were assigned as founding members in the Department. Şimşek CANKUR was appointed as Head of Department and after his retirement in early 2017, Züleyha ALPER was assigned as Head of Department. In order to support the studies on medical education; Dr. Yeşim UNCU, Dr. İlker M. KAFA, Dr. Melda PAYASLIOĞLU, Dr. Güven ÖZKAYA Lecturer. Dr. Sezer ERER KAFA and Dr. Engin SAĞDİLEK was assigned as quarter-time members of TEAD. In 2018, Dr. İlker M. KAFA has started to work as a full time lecturer and Dr. M. Okan AYDIN, Emergency Medicine Specialist at Şevket Yılmaz Training and Research Hospital started to work full time in the Department by assignment.
 

Location and Infrastructure

The department is located in the USIM Center for Good Medicine Practices and Simulation Center. The infrastructure consists of 4 units:
1. Advanced Simulation Unit: Here stands the Emergency Room, Patient Care Room, Delivery Hall, USG Room and Meeting Room.
2. Polyclinics: Patient-physician interviews and communication skills trainings are planned in polyclinics which are equipped for standard patient applications, camera recording and sound receiving system.
3. Learning Resources Center: In this center there are many tools, tools and facilities such as computers, various educational CDs, anatomy models, microscope slides, posters, X-rays, test material, etc.
Microscope: 10 laboratory microscopes with zoom function and 1 with supporting attachments for transfering images to the devices, camera, computer with projector, TV etc. 11 students can work at the same time.
Cyber Anatomy: The Interactive 3-D Virtual Human Anatomy Station consists of 5 stations, where 2-4 students can work simultaneously at each station. Anatomy models in the system are: Skeleton, Joints, Ties, Muscles, Nervous System, Brain, Endocrine System, Cardiovascular System, Lymphatic System, Respiratory System, Digestive System, Urinary System, Reproductive System, Anatomical important formations.
Cyber Physiology: Interactive Virtual Human Physiology Station; consists of 5 stations and each station has the opportunity to work with 2-4 students. The physiology modules in the system are: Cardiovascular System, Respiratory System, Renal System, Circulatory System.
Computer room: A total of 20 computers are available for students. There are various learning resources and licensed programs available to students on these computers.
Virtual patient (Bodyinteract): Used in virtual patient applications.
Two multi-purpose operating rooms: equipped with reflectors and tablets and used for small group work.
4. Clinical Skills Laboratories: Trainings are given in the clinical skills laboratory (CBL) based on qualification and good practice practices on models and manikins. In our clinical skills laboratory, there are 5 separate rooms where different skills trainings are made and the total capacity is 60.

Research Areas and  ve Service Areas

The aim of the Medical Education Department is identified as "By taking into accout scientific data on medical education and realities of Turkey, to ensure that medical education is developed according to changing conditions and requirements, to evaluate and improve the process in the pre-clinical and clinical education programs and to make new plans for the future. 
The department works in conjunction and collaboration with the Dean's Office, the Educational Commission, the Program Evaluation and Development Board and the Assessment and Evaluation Board.
Missions:
1. To provide consultancy services in the committees and commissions of the Faculty of Medicine in relation to education,
2. To carry out Trainer trainings (workshops, seminars, etc.),
3. To develop and evaluate the process in all Terms; making new plans for the future by evaluating the result,
4. To provide integration between the departments of our faculty with holistic and harmonious approach.
5. To provide the necessary infrastructure for students and to improve the use of new information technologies,
6. To ensure the planning, organization and functioning of “USİM (Good Practices and Clinical Skills Laboratory)”,
7. To follow the literature related to medical education and to contribute to the planning of education by making academic studies, to conduct research on medical education,
8. To carry out the necessary researches in order to evaluate the current situation and to ensure that the educational programs are planned in accordance with the current requirements and country realities,
9. To provide education on problem based learning practices including scenario preparation, to provide support to faculty members and to assist in educational curriculum organization,
10. To organize trainings for the development of communication skills.
