Department’s Brief History

Bursa University Faculty of Medicine was established within Istanbul University, after the protocol with the Ministry of Health and Social Assistance, in 1973. The Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis department was founded with Nihat Özyardımcı to associate professors of chest diseases on 27.07.1975. Oktay Gözu, who is a retired professor now, was appointed as a clinical academic in 1976. 
 
With the Ministry of Health's contributions, bronchology, bacteriology, blood gases, pulmonary function tests, biochemistry, and radiology laboratories were established in those years. 
 
With the law numbered 2547, issued in 1982, Bursa University Faculty of Medicine was called Uludag University. Department of Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis has been transformed into a branch of medicine within internal medicine. 
 
After the recourse made in 1983, Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis department was transformed into an independent division, as the first university in Turkey, in January 1984.
 

Location and Infrastructure

Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine Department of Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis was opened on the fifth floor with 12 beds allocated in Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine in 1992. After this temporary settlement, at the end of 1995, it was moved to its current 6th floor. Currently, this service has 23 beds.
 
 

Resident Training Process

Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine has been providing assistantship training since 1976. The research Assistant training program is carried out in weekly literature and seminar hours. In addition to our curriculum hours in our 1st and 2nd-grade student courses, our 3rd and 5th-grade student courses and Sleep Diseases, Occupational Lung Diseases, and lower respiratory tract infections continue with our elective internships.
 

Research Areas and ve Service Areas

 
 

The Sleep Laboratory opened in 2005, and the units of Advanced Pulmonary Function Tests and Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing Laboratory opened in 2007. The pulmonary Diseases Clinic was renewed on May 7, 2014, and has reached its final appearance. 

It also serves as an expanded bronchoscopy unit within the renewed clinic. In addition to the General Pulmonary Diseases Polyclinic in the Department of Outpatient Clinic, Asthma and Allergy Outpatient Clinic, Smoking Cessation Policlinics, Respiratory Function Test Laboratory, and Allergy Laboratory are also serviced. 
Pulmonary rehabilitation approaches have been carried out since November 2016 in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Unit in our department. Since April 2016, endobronchial ultrasound applications have been performed under sedation with the anesthesia team in operating room conditions.
