Department’s Brief History

Undergraduate students had started their medical educations in Medical Department of Istanbul University after the official foundation of Bursa Medical Faculty in 1970-1971. Until the start of admissions to first grade in 1977, students continued their educations in Medical Faculty of Istanbul University. 

On 27.01.1978, Prof. Dr. Muammer Bilge- academic member of Chair of Physiology in Medical Faculty of Cerrahpaşa- had assigned to Medical Faculty of Bursa University and started his academic work in a cabin back at Duaçınarı Hospital’s garden. Hereby Chair of Physiology was established. Kadir Kaymak and Kasım Özlük started working as the first research assistants of the chair. After the loss of Prof Bilge and his family in a tragic car accident, Chair of Physiology had no academic members left. As Prof Dr Şermin Kalayci is the assigned head, Chair of Physiology and Chair of Histology merged together to establish Chair of Physiology-Histology.

With the technical support and supervision of Departments of Physiology and Internal Medicine in Medical Faculty of Cerrahpasa, Kadir Kaymak and Kasım Özlük received their medical expertise and PhD degrees. After receiving his PhD degree in 1983, Kadir Kayak quit from Chair of Physiology and transferred to Department of Physiology, Medical Faculty of Trakya University. 

In 1984, Chair of Physiology-Histology diverged. With Dr. Kasım Özlük assigned as Assistant Professor  in 1984 and Head of Department there after, Department of Physiology has officially been established. Department of Physiology had been moved to Görükle Campus in 1984 where it is currently emplaced with other departments of Basic Medical Sciences, Medical Faculty.  

In 17.10.1989, Asst. Prof. Kasım Özlük became an Associate Professor. To train future academics,  Department of Physiology commenced Master’s and PhD programmes in 1990 with the support of Department of Pharmacology and Faculty of Veterinary. 

Academics who are currently a member and were trained in the Department of Physiology; 

Prof. Naciye İŞBİL, Prof. Nevzat KAHVECİ, Prof. Tülin ALKAN, Prof. Fadıl ÖZYENER, Prof. Bülent GÖREN, Ayşen ÇAKIR.

Up to date, 18 Master’s students, 17 PhD students and 5 Medical Expertise students have graduated from the Department of Physiology.

Location and Infrastructure

Department of Physiology is located on the first floor of Basic Medical Sciences building. It consists of academic members’ rooms, research laboratories and student laboratories. 

Research Labs of the department include; General Physiology Lab, Hematology Lab., Cardiovasculer Lab., Neurovascular Research Lab, Behavior and Pain Research Lab. 

Resident Training Process

Department of Physiology currently provides training for medical expertise, Master’s and PhD degrees as well as undergraduate students. These training are scheduled as 4 years for Medical Expertise training, 2 years for Master’s degree and 4 years for PhD degree.  Students are expected to succeed at theoretical and practical courses, write and defense a dissertation based on a scientific research all according to regulations. 

Research Areas and Service Areas

  • - Research on haemostatis, coagulation and fibrinolysis.
  • - Epilepsy and peripheral nerve studies. 
  • - Developing neuroprotector products to prevent and/or reverse neuronal damage. 
  • - Models of cerebral and spinal ischemia (temporary/permanent focal cerebral ischemia) and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, bacillary artery occlusion, head trauma, hyperoxic brain damage.
  • - Neurodegenerative diseases, experimental Parkinson Disease and experimental autism model.
  • - Effects of peripheral and central injections of regulator peptides on blood pressure, heart rate, gastric mucosal injuries and gastric mucosal blood flow and their mechanisms of action.
  • - Investigation of the effects of various peptides on vascular contractility and their mechanisms
  • - Modeling pain, depression, learning-memory, sleep and searching effects and mechanisms of action of various agents on these models. 
  • - Studies in Exercise and Respiratory Physiology include testings of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test and Respiratory Function Test which are conducted with Departments of Thoracic Diseases and Sports Medicine interdisciplinary.
