Department’s Brief History
Bursa University, Faculty of Medicine, which was founded in 1970, decided to take five anesthesiologists with a commission decision in 1973. In 1975, Uludag University Faculty of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation was established with the appointment of Assoc. Dr. Orhan Toydemir, and all anesthesia specialist staff participated in this lectern. In 1977, Orhan Toydemir achieved the title of professor; and in 1975, Gürayten Özyurt, in 1977 Oya Kutlay and Berin Özcan received the title of associate professor. In 1979, Dr. Şükran Şahin and then Dr. Gülsen Korfalı completed her specialization as first and second trainee graduates in this department and continued their duties as a specialist doctors.
With Prof. Dr. Alp Gurbet in lead, currently 10 faculty members -Prof. Dr. Suna Gören, Prof. Dr. Ferda Ş. Kahveci, Prof. Dr. Hülya Bilgin, Prof. Dr. Belgin Yavaşcaoğlu, Prof. Dr. Elif Başağan Moğol, Prof. Dr. Gürkan Türker, Prof. Dr. F. Nur Kaya, Prof. Dr. Nermin Kelebek Girgin, and Prof. Dr. Remzi İşçimen-and a specialist -Dr. Selcan Yerebakan- are actively working in our department.
In our department, anesthesia training is given for neuroanesthesia, cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery, general surgery, pediatric surgery, orthopedics and traumatology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, transplantation, gynecology and obstetrics, urology, otolaryngology surgery and eye diseases. Specific topics have been identified, and responsible faculty members and specialists have been appointed, including, for example, Algology, intensive care, non-operating room anesthesia, sedation practices, and pre-anesthesia patient evaluation.
A total of 160 Anesthesiology and Reanimation specialists have been graduated from our clinic as of January 13, 2019. The number of specialization students is 34.
Our clinic has been awarded with the European Expertise Training Accreditation Certificate in 2008 after audition of specialty training program by European Medical Specialists Association / European Anesthesia Proficiency Board (UEMS / EBA). This document was renewed in 2011 and 2015. The Turkish Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation (TARD) Qualification Board awarded the Competency Certificate of the Institution's Specialist Training in February 2015.
An Intensive Care Unit with 19 level 3 patient care capacity and 6 postanesthesia care unit capacity, and an Algology unit with 4 patient capacity is serving under our department.
Uludağ Winter Symposiums which were held first in 1976 are organized by our department every year since 1992.
Location and Infrastructure
Our department is located on the floor of the operating room in the form of faculty members rooms, seminar room, meeting room and female trainee room. The intensive care unit is located on the second floor of the hospital building and the Algology clinic is located on the 3rd floor in the same building.
Resident Training Process
In our department, there are both specialization and medical students in medicine. The training program was organized in accordance with the European Society of Medical Professionals / European Anesthesia Proficiency Committee. Specialization in medical education is programmed for 5 years, intensive care unit specialization training is 3 years and Algology minor program is scheduled for 2 years. Students are expected to be successful in theoretical and applied courses according to regulations and to prepare their thesis based on scientific research and to defend their thesis successfully.
Research Areas and ve Service Areas
Our department provides services on general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, liver and kidney transplantation anesthesia in a 24-room operating room, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our intensive care unit provides the care of the intensive care patients with 19 beds in the third level and the postoperative patients with 6 beds and our Algology unit provides outpatient and inpatient services during the week.
