Education and Career

Mehmet Cansev graduated from Denizli Anatolian High School in 1993 and from Uludag University Faculty of Medicine in 1999. He completed his residency in the same university as a pharmacologist in 2003. He worked at the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a post-doctoral associate between 2004 and 2008. Then he returned to Uludag University Faculty of Medicine Department of Medical Pharmacology and was promoted Associate Professor in 2008 and Full Professor in 2014. He received R. Kazim Turker Best Young Pharmacologist Award from Turkish Pharmacology Association (2008), Best Young Scientist Award from Turkish Academy of Sciences (2009) and Incentive Award from TUBITAK (2014). He gives neuropharmacology classes at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Areas of Interest and Research

Dr. Cansev is interested in studying neurodegeneration and neurotransmission using tools of neurosciences and pharmacology. He is dedicated to elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases as well as investigating novel treatment approaches for such conditions. For these purposes, he utilizes established rodent models of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Moreover, he investigates the efficacy of novel approaches in various brain vascular disorders including stroke. Neurotransmission is another major area of his research interest. He has a long-standing interest in cholinergic neurotransmission in several aspects including central cholinergic regulation of cardiovascular and neuroendocrine systems as well as cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Recently, he has focused on pyrimidinergic system and the existence of pyrimidinergic neurotransmission in the rat brain was discovered in his laboratory.
