• The Experimental Animal Research Center was established under the management of the department by Zootechnics Specialist Veterinary Dr. Ataman Güre (February 23, 1976). The center gained an independent status after the Dr. Ataman Güre’s associate professor appointment.

• Name of the department was changed to Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (1976).

• Microbiology Specialist Rebia Ceran was added to the staff and served about one and a half years (1977).

• Prof. Dr. İ. Kaya Kılıçturgay was appointed to the position of the professor (July 1978) after the death of Prof. Dr. Ömer Fethi Tezok (founding rector) at the date of February 2, 1978.

 

1. Historical Development of the Department

• At the beginning; limited healthcare services (only bacteriological and serological tests) were performed in a 65m² area which had three rooms and one middle sized laboratory in front of the library of old hospital building. In addition, the practical lessons of phase III medical faculty students were also performed in that area.

• After the moving of the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Department to the prefabricated building at the backyard, the clinic of Infectious Diseases was put into service (February 2, 1979). Not only the healthcare services but also the profile of the student education were expanded.

• Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Okan Töre from Eskisehir Military Hospital was added to the staff (February 1979).

• Prof. Dr. Salih Toppare passed away at the date of December 6, 1979.

• After the law on higher education had published at the year of 1981, the name of the department was changed to Microbiology Department.

• The clinical and outpatient services of the Infectious Diseases were continued under the department of Microbiology.

• Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Handan Ata from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine was added to the staff (April 1981).

• Prof. Dr. İ. Kaya Kılıçturgay - Minister of Health (December 1981);

• Associate Prof. Dr. Feridun Gökırmak - Undersecretary of Health Minister (May 1982)

left from the department via temporary assignments.

• Blood Center was established under the responsibility of Associate Prof. Dr. Okan Töre (1983). The center was continued to serve under the department of Microbiology for one year until having the own building.

• Prof. Dr. İ. Kaya Kılıçturgay and Prof. Dr. Feridun Gökırmak were came back from their duties at the Minister of Health and Social Assistance (January 1984).

• Theoretical and practical practises of the phase II and III medical students were performed at the classrooms in Görükle Campus and at the laboratories of the Basic Medical Sciences building.

• Assistant Prof. Dr. Suna Gedikoğlu joined the department from On Dokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Microbiology (1986).

• Genetic Medicine (Cytogenetic) Laboratory was established under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. İ. Kaya Kılıçturgay (1986) and Resident Sevim Akçağlar continued the management of the laboratory between the years of 1986 and 1997. Routine laboratory services was conducted by Microbiologist Sevim Akçağlar until the transfer to the Medical Biology and Genetics Department at the year of 1997.

• Foundation works of the Immunology Laboratory were started by the management of Prof. Dr. İ. Kaya Kılıçturgay (1988).

• Prof. Dr. Feridun Gökırmak, Resident Dr. A. Cezmi Akdiş, Microbiology Specialist Orhan Şenyüz and Biologist Ferah Budak worked at different stages of the establishment (1988-1990).

• Departments of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology were established (1989).

• Clinical, outpatient and laboratory services with education of all medical students were started to take place in Görükle Campus (May 1992).

• Foundation works of the Molecular Virology Laboratory were started by the management of Asistant Prof. Dr. Reşit Mıstık (1993).

• Routine service was started at the laboratory where the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were mainly performed via scientific researches (1994).

• Foundation works of Uludag University Hospital Infections Control Committee (HICC) were started by the management of Prof. Dr. Feridun Gökırmak and the directive was prepared (1993). During the foundation works, Dr. Halis Akalın and Head of Public Health Department Prof. Dr. Hamdi Aytekin gave assistance to Prof. Dr. Feridun Gökırmak.

• The first meeting of HICC (approved by the Senate of Uludag University at the date of 21.09.1995 with session number 95-11) that was headed by Prof. Dr. Feridun Gökırmak was held on 13.11.1995.

• From its foundation to the present, Prof. Dr. Feridun Gökırmak (1995-1997), Prof. Dr. Suna Gedikoğlu (1997-2006) and Prof. Dr. E. Halis Akalın (2006-……) presided over the HICC.

• Prof. Dr. Halis Akalın took the leadership of Infection Prevention and Control Team when the Uludag University SUAM Hospital took the accreditation of JCI for the two periods.

• Associate Prof. Dr. Beyza Ener joined the department from Marmara University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Microbiology (1995).

• Tissue Typing Laboratory which serves under the responsibility of Prof. Dr. H. Barbaros Oral, received the licence from Healt of Minister (2003).

• Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Department was established via the decision of Council of Higher Education (25.01.2005).

• Five lecturers from Microbiology Department (Prof. Dr. Safiye Helvacı, Prof. Dr. Reşit Mıstık, Prof. Dr. E. Halis Akalın, Assistant Prof. Dr. Yasemin Heper and Specialist Dr. Emel Yılmaz) were assigned to the newly established department.

Our department achieved the “Qualification Certificate of Training Specialist” after the evaluation process by the KLIMIK and Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Education and Qualification Board at the date of 12 November 2010.

 

Place and Infrastructure

Our department continues its services at a clinic (with 14 beds) at the seventh floor of the SUAM Hospital. In addition, vaccination and outpatient clinic serve at the first floor of the hospital building. 

The rooms of the lecturers are placed at the entrance floor of the Basic Medical Sciences Building.

 

Education Process of the Residents

Medical residency students receive training at our deparment. Duration of education period is 5 years. Seminar  programmes are carried out together with Medical Microbiology and Immunology Departments.

Scientific areas of interest are consisted of intensive care acquired infections and ventilator related pneumonia, antimicrobial resistance and prevention policies, infections of immunosupressed hosts, Acinetobacter baumannii infections, HIV/AIDS, sepsis and fungal infections.

Scientific areas of interest; Surgical Site Infections, Healthcare Associated Infections , Brucellosis, Central Nervous System Infections, Antibiotic Stewardwhip.

 

Associate Prof. Dr. Yasemin Heper

Scientific areas of interest; Community acquiered and nosocomial infections such as orthopedical infections (especially prosthetic joint infections), endocarditis, problematic infections during pregnancy, burn wound infections, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV. In addition, intensely interested in blood and transfusion center, especially infections transmitted by transfusion, screening tests and management of patient blood.
