CLINICAL (BLOCK EDUCATION) TERM

Fourth year: In this term the block education program is applied. During this 39-week period, each student is required to attend and finish successfully the following 7 different block education program: internal medicine, pediatrics and pediatric surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, psychiatry, cardiology and neurology. Each student is required to attend seminar program which do not exceed 2 hours. The objectives of these seminar program are to give detailed information about symptoms, diagnosis and treatments of diseases, to present knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of some clinical problems which have not been mentioned before, and to provide students all basic knowledge required as a general practitioner. Each student has to attend other clinical activities at the remainder of the day with the responsible academic staff. These activites will include seeing patients at the outpatient department and visiting the cases in the wards, and cases will be discussed in detail during these activities. During the obligatory training term, under the supervion of the responsible academic staff each student must prepare a seminar, which is related to their personal interest, and present it written and orally a date and time designated by the responsible academic staff.

Student gains 1 credit from this seminar. At the end of training program training examinations are given. The examinations are composed of written (multiple choice tests) and oral parts. The final points gained from the exam is determined by calculating the average of both the written and oral examination results.

Fifth year: The first 24 weeks of this year comprises obligatory block education program. Elective block education program is applied in the remaining 14 weeks. Each student is expected to take a total of 38 credits composed of 24 credits from obligatory training courses (12 obligatory training course, 24 credits) and 14 credits from elective training courses (7 elective training courses, 14 credits). Each elective training course takes 2 weeks. Each student is expected to register to 7 elective training program and has to be successful in the end. During the elective block education program, each student must attend student seminars and work under the supervision of the academic staff, and succeed in written and oral examinations at the end of the program. During the elective training term, each student must prepare a seminar under the supervion of the responsible academic staff which is related to their personal interest, and present it written and orally at a designated date and time by the responsible academic staff. Student gains 1 credit from this seminar. Starting from January 26, 2004 , a forensic medicine obligatory course will be given in this term for 7 weeks every Monday between 3 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.

Sixth year: Each student, who have completed aforementioned required credits in the program, undergoes the term defined as family medicine. In this term, student works as a medical doctor under the supervision of academic staffs and carries all kinds of responsibilities in this subject. Student gets the opportunity to use the knowledge and skills gained from responsible academic staff in previous eduction terms; actively attends routine outpatient practices in every department; follows up and takes care of the patients in the wards; turns of duty; and takes a place in medical attempts. There is no examination in this term. Students are followed up according to the program on a daily basis and their success is evaluated by the responsible academic staff of the departments.
